The Sunken Garden are a magnificent sight to behold. Built in 1930 on a 1.5 acre, in 2004 was renovated after the Lincoln Public Parks raised 1.7 million to fund the project. Today the garden stretches out on 4 acres. The design of the garden was inspired by the Sissington Castle Gardens in the UK. The sunken is the depression of the ground level and is surrounded by terraces and walkways throughout the garden. There are walking trails and handicap accessibility is provided. The grounds are maintained by dedicated volunteers, called Garden Artists because of their creativity. There are over 416 tress and 500 tropical and subtropical plants.

It is noted in the history of Nebraska that this botanical bliss of beauty was once a city dump site. There are two lily ponds on the ground level that are a center of attraction. Today thousands visit the garden to sit and mediate gazing at the colorful manicured plants while others take pictures.

The Sunken Gardens is listed in The National Geographic Guide to Public Gardens as one of the 300 Best Gardens to visit in the United States and Canada. The number tourist that visited the garden in 2019 was 123,000. The gardens are known as the “Gem” in Lincoln as it holds two new statures. The admission and parking to the garden is free. The garden host several events, the most recent event is the “Art in the Garden.” Nolye’s Gallery, a local gallery presents several of its local artists to showcase their work such as art, jewelry, woodwork, and much more. Harsch, one of the local artists said, "each month an artist is featured in gallery and my art will be featured room at the Foyle’s Gallery in November." Adults, young adults, and children canvass the grounds viewing the displays. The Sunken Gardens will be around for a longtime for Nebraskans and visitors to enjoy.
