Each Sunday there is a gathering of dedicated farmers that participate in providing the community with produce at below market prices. The market prices can guaranteed to beat the average store marked up prices.
Not all the vendors accept credit cards for payment but there’s no need to worry, the market’s administration’s office will exchange payment for the cash token amount, that is excepted by all vendors. The Supplemental Nutrients Assistant Program, (SNAP) card is also honored at the market, providing quality food for those that may be in a food assistance program. There is also a program the weekly market participates in for senior citizens called (Senior Farmers Market Nutrient Program,) it is federally funded to give seniors access to healthy foods.
The weekly Sunday Farmer’s Market event provides a space for Farmers and their families to promote and sell their products. There is an array of humongous eggplants, squash, pecans and even farm raised beef. The Sunday Farmer’s Market is in walking distance of local residents and is on a visible corner that attracts passing traffic.
If a vendor would like to participate in the market to sell their produce. There is a criteria to maintain the Sunday Farmers Market’s mission. They must be the authentic producer of the produce, they must be residence of Nebraska and can’t live over 200 miles outside of Lincoln, NE and carry a million dollars of liability insurance. The CDC reports that 19% of young people aged 2 to 19 years and 40% of adults have obesity and are at risk for type 2 diabetes. The Sunday Farmers Markets bring a wealth of education in healthy eating and economic value to the people of community.
